Canteen supports young people aged 13-24 when cancer turns their world upside down and helps them cope with the physical, emotional and practical impact of living with cancer.

The Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Network provides strategic direction, clinical leadership and monitoring of AYA cancer in New Zealand. The aim of the network is to find new and innovative ways of delivering care to all AYAs diagnosed with cancer and to improve outcomes.

Travel & Accommodation Assistance:

The National Travel Assistance Scheme helps people who need to travel long distances or travel frequently. It is administered by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora

Ronald McDonald House provides free accommodation and support services for hospitalised children receiving treatment away from home.

Psychosocial Support:

The Counselling Project supports children and families to access counselling support.

Kenzie’s Gift supports children, young people and their whānau who are affected by serious illness or grief to access mental health support.

Cultural Support / Tautoko Ahurea:

He Kāmaka Waiora – Kaiatawhai - Māori Health (Starship)

Kaiatawhai are a Māori Health team at Starship Child Health. The service is designed to ensure the cultural and spiritual needs of Māori patients and their whānau are met. Kaiatawhai services are individualised according to the specific needs of the whānau. The Kaiatawhai awhi (assist), manaaki (care for) and tautoko (support) patients and their whānau. As a participant in whānau meetings, Kaiatawhai will ensure the cultural and spiritual components of the meeting are addressed. Kaiatawhai will refer to chaplaincy services and external Māori providers as required.

Tautai Fakataha (Pacific Family Support Service) (Starship)

The Pacific Family Support team provides social and cultural support to Pacific children and their families. Pacific support work with a multidisciplinary health team (nurses, doctors, social workers, physiotherapist etc.) to ensure Pacific family’s cultural values and social needs are recognised, respected and integrated into care. Current team members are fluent in Samoan and Tongan and we can arrange interpreters for all other Pacific languages if required.

Māori Health Service (CHOC)

Ngā Ratonga Hauroa Māori provide āwhina/support to tūroro/patient and whānau/family while they are using the hospital. Their doors are open to all cultures. Their role is to assist tūroro through the hospital system and make the journey as smooth as possible.

Cultural Support / Tautoko Ahurea:

Make a Wish grants wishes and experiences for children and young people with life-threatening conditions up to 18 years of age.

Camp Quality New Zealand is a charity that provides camps for children & young people living with cancer.

Paediatric Palliative Care Support:

Palliative care is a type of care that helps children with cancer manage symptoms and improve quality of life. It can be given at any stage of cancer but is often used for children with advanced cancer. 

The Paediatric Palliative Care team provides specialist palliative care for infants, children and young people living with serious illness in both hospital and community settings.
Rei Kōtuku are are paediatric palliative care specialists. They care for babies, children and teenagers with serious illness and their whānau, from Wellington to Hawke’s Bay.
Rainbow Place is free supportive service for children and young people with advanced or incurable life limiting conditions who live in Waikato.
True Colours offers comprehensive support for families, including counselling, emotional and clinical care, therapeutic modalities, advocacy with healthcare professionals, and bereavement support for families in Waikato.
