New Zealand Child Cancer Registry

About

The New Zealand Children’s Cancer Registry (NZCCR) is an opt-out registry of children diagnosed with cancer and some related non-cancer conditions in New Zealand. NZCCR includes information for almost all children diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand since January 2000.

The Late Effects Assessment Programme (LEAP) monitors children who have completed treatment, to identify and manage any issues that may arise as a result of their cancer or treatment. This information is also recorded in NZCCR.

NZCCR and LEAP helps health professionals to understand how many children are diagnosed with these conditions in New Zealand, the types of cancer and conditions that affect them, and their treatment outcomes. NZCCR data is used to see how successful New Zealand is at caring for children with these conditions.

The more complete the data, the greater the value the NZCCR and LEAP are for improving treatment and care in the future.

NZCCR has ethical approval from the Health and Disability Ethics Committee (MEC/11/EXP/134).

Information for Researchers

What data does NZCCR collect?

  • Demographic Information: age at diagnosis, sex/gender, ethnicity.
  • Diagnosis Information: date of diagnosis, diagnosis, site.
  • Treatment Information: chemotherapies, surgeries, transplants, protocols.
  • Late Effects Information: Treatment related events, post-treatment surveillance.

How do I access NZCCR?

To access data collected for NZCCR, please complete and email the Data Request Form to the NCCN Database manager. All requests are reviewed by the NZCCR Working Group. Data will only be accessible to researchers with approval from the NZCCR Working Group.

In most cases, we will require you do seek advice or the involvement of a member of the NZCCR Working Group (or a nominee) in your research. We are happy to connect you with an appropriate member to support your work.

Do I need ethical approval for my research?

We encourage you to seek approval from an ethics review committee.

Some activities may not require the approval of an ethics committee. In these cases, you will need to provide an explanation for why approval is not required.
